Benfica experienced their first setback in 10 matches in all competitions following a nine-game undefeated streak. They were humbled on the road 1-0 by Sporting Lisbon in their previous meeting. That defeat was their second in the Primeira Liga this season, after 16 rounds of matches, alongside 12 wins and two draws.
As Águias sit third in the standings on 38 points, two behind the top spot held by Sporting CP (40 points). Benfica will focus on closing the gap to the top, as they are quite safe from third-placed Santa Clara, who are on 30 points. A win could move the hosts to the summit if Sporting and Porto stall on the day.
