NHL analyst Mike Johnson suggested that the Toronto Maple Leafs consider placing captain Auston Matthews on long-term injured reserve (LTIR) to free up salary cap space before the trade deadline.

Sports journalist Michael Distefano highlighted that this move could provide the team with approximately $14 million in cap space, which could be used to enhance their roster.

During a recent episode of TNT's "Overdrive" show, Johnson reiterated the potential financial benefits of placing Matthews on LTIR. However, Johnson also stressed the importance of Matthews' health, suggesting that if he is unable to stay healthy during games, it might be best for him to take a break and focus on recovery.
