Can Brentford pick up a much needed win at Southampton this weekend? [Image: @BrentfordFC on X]
Southampton play host to Brentford in a Premier League game at St. Mary's Stadium this Saturday. Southampton are currently bottom of the table and have shown no signs of an improvement in form since changing manager last month. Brentford, meanwhile, currently sit in 12th place, but could climb into the top ten depending on other results.
So can the Saints pull off their second win of the season here, or will they continue to struggle, leading to a Brentford win?
Southampton vs Brentford Head-to-Head and Key Numbers
- If recent matches are anything to go by, Southampton could be in trouble here, as they have a poor record against Brentford. The Bees have won their last four matches against Southampton, including their last visit to St. Mary's in March 2023.
- With just six points to their name at the halfway point of the campaign, Southampton are in very real danger of matching or breaking Derby County's infamous record low points total from the 2007-08 season. The Rams won just one game that season and collected eleven points in total.
- With just twelve goals scored this season, the biggest problem the Saints have had is in front of goal. In contrast to this, Brentford have scored 33 goals thus far, with only four teams producing more.
- While they currently sit in a comfortable mid-table spot, Brentford's recent form has been somewhat concerning. Thomas Frank's side have won just once in their last six games, and that victory came back on December 7. Most recently, they fell to Arsenal.
- To add to all their other issues this season, Southampton's disciplinary record is appalling. They have collected more yellow cards than any other side (56), are one of only two teams to receive two red cards, and midfielder Flynn Downes has picked up seven bookings, the most in the Premier League to date.
