Inter Miami superstar Lionel Messi
Inter Miami's Lionel Messi wasn't present at the White House to receive his Presidential Medal of Freedom due to a scheduling error as per GOAL. The Argentine ace was among 19 people, including basketball legend Magic Johnson, who were bestowed with America's highest civilian honor this week.
Messi has taken the MLS to the world stage since arriving at the Chase Stadium in the summer of 2023. However, his philanthropic work off the pitch was recognized by the White House.
Unfortunately, Lionel Messi couldn't be present at the White House for the ceremony. A statement from the player's camp stated:
"The White House informed FIFA, which informed the club at the end of December that Leo was to be awarded this recognition. Leo, through the club, sent a letter to the White House saying that he feels deeply honored and that it is a great privilege to receive this recognition but that due to scheduling conflicts and prior commitments he will not be able to attend. He thanked the gesture and noted that he hopes to have the opportunity to meet with him in the near future."
